Where the Bloom Begins is personal.

Travel has always been the thing that awakened me: to the world, to perspectives I’d never considered, to versions of myself I hadn’t met yet. Every flight, every new place, planted something. The growth never happened where I was comfortable; it began the moment I left, the moment I was somewhere unfamiliar enough to really see.

These seats carried thousands of people toward their own awakenings. That’s where the bloom begins - not at the destination, but in the leaving.

This piece is crafted from recycled leather sourced from @SouthwestAirlines airplane seats through their Repurpose with Purpose program. A huge thanks to Turnip Green Creative Reuse @turnipgreencreativereuse for making this collaboration possible. There’s beauty in giving materials a second life - and a whole new purpose.

Vegetable tanned leather has always been the standard for molding and holding shape; it’s predictable, firm, and made for it. But I’ve always been more interested in seeing how far I can push materials that aren’t supposed to behave that way.

I’ve always experimented with molding chrome tanned leather instead. I can’t follow the same type of process you would with vegetable tanned, especially when it comes to wet molding, which forces me to approach shaping in a completely different way.

What I’ve found is that thinner leathers, especially lambskin, actually hold form surprisingly well when combined with glue and the right process.

A big part of craftsmanship, for me, is questioning what a material is “supposed” to do.

Last year I tried vacuum pressing leather with food sealing bags… and it completely failed. So investing in something more expensive and actually capable felt like a risk in itself.

When it comes to leather craft, a lot of the techniques I want to experiment with have very limited resources online - no tutorials, no real references - so most of the time I’m figuring it out through trial, error, and ruined material.

This was my first real attempt at vacuum pressing leather, and watching the texture pull, stretch, and hold its form felt like discovering the material all over again!

Sometimes the next level of your work is hiding inside the technique you’ve been avoiding. 🙌🏻

Last week, I finally wrapped up my leather frame install for the Westin Nashville Hotel! There were many bumps in the road, from no scissor lift being available to use - much too large welded joints, but the team got it done!
